“Learning is the process

whereby knowledge is created

through the transformation

of experience”

As an art educator, one of my main goals is for students to learn by doing (Kolb, 1984). The act of doing and creating is an exploration process through which they not only build on prior knowledge, they absorb new knowledge and put it into practice. I believe art education offers an incredible opportunity to put students at the center of their education so that they can expand critical thinking and visual skills, both of which are vital in today’s world. By analyzing and comparing artwork, introducing thought provoking questions (VTS, Housen and Yenawine, 1980), working in different media,  reflecting about their work, students' learning experiences are enriched and become more authentic. It is through this process that they enhance their problem solving abilities and discover their own individuality while gaining self confidence.

In addition, coming from a multicultural background myself, I recognize that today’s classrooms are more diverse than ever. I am aware that many different elements overlap, such as race, gender, socio-economic, cultural and religion. It is my responsibility to react to this intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989) and provide a positive learning environment by cultivating empathy and reflection on peer's perspectives. Building these connections through collaboration and respect, students can find the freedom to express themselves through their artwork and even beyond the art classroom.

As someone who started teaching by working with ELL students, I strongly believe in classroom inclusion. All students deserve equal access to education. Working with ELL students has been a rewarding experience that has deepened my views on the importance of utilizing multiple strategies to reach students. From questioning strategies, group work, use of technology, visuals, freedom of choice materials, collaborative learning, to simply being a personable and approachable teacher, integrating different tools and strategies in the classroom is fundamental to providing all students with a meaningful educational experience.

Teaching provides me with the opportunity to learn from students, colleagues and the school community. Learning is an ongoing experience and as an educator, I will continue to be open and motivated to acquire new knowledge. Being a teacher is a lifelong commitment to ongoing learning of new ideas and implementing new strategies. I will continue growing and developing as an educator so I can provide my students with the best learning experiences possible.
