Textile collage portrait

Number of periods: 4 • Materials: Various fabric scraps, scissors, glue, pencils and sketchbook.

Description: Students will experiment and apply techniques such as textile collage and mixed media, along with drawing, planning, color selection and application in order to create a portrait. They will investigate personal identity and build up on concepts of self and ancestry through  the use of textiles as they develop an expressionist self portrait using fabrics.


Printmaking: social issues poster

Number of periods: 6 • Materials: Linoleum block, carving tools, pencils, erasers, rulers, brayers, block printing ink in various colors, trays, block printing paper.

Description: Students explore the printmaking process in order to create a poster that expresses ideas about power, social concerns as well as communal identity. They discover their place in the world in relation to social issues and concerns they have. Students plan, design and execute their ideas through drawing, carving and printmaking.


DRAWING: SCRATCHBOARD CITYSCAPE

Number of periods: 3 • Materials: Sketchbook, pencils, erasers, phone with camera, scratchboard and scratch tools.

Description: Students experiment using scratchboards to create an engraved cityscape or landscape drawing. They start by using their own photographs and drawing ideas on their sketchbooks. Students discuss their relationship to place and community as well as the artistic process of line making by substraction (rather than adding on the surface), line weight, crosshatching, stippling and repetition.

 
 

PAINTING: FOOD CRAVINGS

Number of periods: 3 • Materials: canvas paper, acrylic paints, brushes, pencils, containers for water.

Description: Students explore everyday life as they pick their favorite food to create a painting using acrylic paints. They practice color mixing and creative use of the elements of art and principles of design. Students learn and explore how to shape objects with shadows and highlights to give them a three dimensional quality.


MY FAMILY PORTRAIT: DIGITAL COLLAGE

Number of periods: 3 • Materials: Computer, image manipulation software such a Adobe Photoshop or Google drawing and printer.

Description: Students explore concepts of self and how family, ancestry, ethnicity, religion or community play a part in their own identity and their family’s. They create a digital collage using photos of family members or important people in their lives to reflect on their identity.


Yarn painting

Grade: 9th • Number of periods: 4 • Materials: computer for research, sketchbooks, pencils, cardboard, yarn of different colors, scissors, liquid glue container for water.

Description: In this lesson students will plan and execute a composition to create a yarn painting. They will learn about traditional yarn painting as an expression of Mexican and central American cultures. Students will look into their own heritage and use symbolism to represent parts of their identity. Issues of appropriation and cultural identity will be discussed.

Grade: 9th • Number of periods: 3 • Materials: computer for research, Ipad, tablet, or phone, stylus pens, Flipaclip app or animation app.

Description: Students will discover how they can create meaning through visual narratives and digital storytelling as they expand their digital, technology and visual literacy skills by creating a digital animation. Through collaboration and sharing, they will learn from each other the social problems that affect students, creating an opportunity for empathy, perspective thinking and self reflection.
